One of Them Days stars Keke Palmer and SZA as Dreux and Alyssa, who are best friends living together in Los Angeles. Best friends and roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are about to have One of Them Days. When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.
This film is one of the funniest movies I’ve watched in a while. It feels like it takes notes from classic movies like “Friday” and “Harold and Kumar” then adds a feminine flair that elevates the humor to a new level. There is also well-balanced drama within the comedy that keeps the plot interesting by showing the ups and downs of friendship. The sharp wit and relatability of the characters in their chaotic situations is a fun adventure that makes it hard to hear the jokes at times because the audience was laughing so hard.
That being said, the cast and writers made One of Them Days feel like it can be watched for years to come. The chemistry among the characters was truly a sight to see as they searched the city of Los Angeles for a way to get the rent money back. Along the way, we get to see familiar actors work so well together to create nonstop deep belly-laughing scenes. Also worth noting is Issa Rae is one of the producers so the soundtrack was stellar. It felt reminiscent of watching “Insecure” with the music pushing the story along which was a nice bonus.
The combination of comedy and drama, a compatible cast, and a hit-filled soundtrack, makes One of Them Days a strong contender for one of the year’s funniest movies despite still being in the first month. The film refreshes the best friend comedy genre in a way that is sure to elicit laughs as audiences witness a day few would want to experience.
