The Wild Robot is the animated adaptation of the revered children’s book by Peter Brown. Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) is a robot who unexpectedly wakes up on a deserted island meaning she can’t fulfill her intended purpose to make human lives easier. She learns to navigate her new world and forms a bond with the wildlife to build a community. Can this animated film become a classic like the book it’s based on?

The animation is a standout experience and nothing short of spectacular. It takes viewers to the island for an adventure they won’t soon forget. It feels like watching a beautifully crafted scenery filled with the intricately drawn Roz, animals, and forest landscape.

Every scene feels like the animators took their time to make the visuals come to life. This helps to build a connection to the world of The Wild Robot. This connection is enhanced by the spirited voice and multi-layered humor to tell a compelling story packed with lessons for all ages.

The film does not shy away from dark humor that will appeal to adult audiences. Roz’s deadpan attempts to understand the animals are clever to show the contrasting qualities of artificial intelligence trying to fit in with the organic animals. Bring a few tissues because the impactful voice acting blends well with their differences for a charming and vulnerable story that is well executed.

The Wild Robot books are a trilogy so I wouldn’t be surprised if the studio follows this formula to bring the sequels to the big screen. The visually rich experience and voice acting exhibit how adaptations can breathe new life into an existing story. The whimsical animated world is a must-see for young and adult audiences with its relatable characters, quick-witted humor, and exploration of what it means to live.

THE WILD ROBOT is in theaters on September 27th, 2024.
