The thought process being this movie is where it needs to be. However, sometimes things get carried away and last too long. Sometimes it may go too over the top. Well, that's where ARGYLLE may have missed the mark. What could have been an amazing movie gets taken back by what was created to be too long last and over the top elements.
Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.
The comedy is here for it. You will find yourself laughing more often than you think. The style of the movie is smooth as well. It all does feel like one piece of movie that flows smoothly to the next scene, even with all the flashes of new people in the movie.
Some scenes do go far too over the top, and just seem way too silly. While this maybe the style they wanted, with this very long runtime, it just makes the movie feel dragged out.
Each character is perfect for this movie. What we think about who is a spy and who is really a spy is a good way to look at the movie. It will leave you wanting more of that backstory and not so much Argylle's.
This is a good popcorn movie. The popcorn is needed to help you through the long, slow parts. The popcorn can't help when the movie becomes too predictable while you're watching it.
Make sure you stay through the credits for a mid-credit scene.
ARGYLLE is in Theaters on February 2nd, 2024.
