Normally, dry comedy is my go to. The drier the better, I always say. Well, I learned that with PAINT, I maybe wrong. Sometimes the jokes here are just so dry, that they end up being more cringe than funny.
In PAINT Owen Wilson portrays Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public television painter who is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke…until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.
Owen Wilson does give a funny performance as Carl, who resembles Bob Ross, but is not supposed to be based on Bob Ross. Sometimes the jokes or comedy they were trying to pull off came off more cringe than funny. You will not only feel it yourself, but you can feel it from the actors as well. Sometimes they themselves seem like what they are doing isn't going to appease audiences, yet they do it anyway.
There's moments in the movie where you think it's going to end, but after you check you see there's way too much time left in the movie for it to end.
By the end of the film, it does all come together, but it takes a long time to happen. The end results seemed like it was forced to happen that way, then it was more of a natural ending.
If you can, I'd say wait to watch this one at home. This way, when you get bored with it, or it starts to seem unfunny to you, you can stop it and come back and finish at a later time.
PAINT is exclusively in theaters nationwide on April 7th, 2023.
