When you think of Ethan Hawke, your first thought isn't a bad guy and it's definitely not creep. Well, 'The Black Phone' is going to make you think both while you watch it. You will see Ethan Hawke in a different light than we've seen before, and it's kind of amazing. He's a perfect creep.
The phone is dead. And it’s ringing. Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
I feel like I'm one of the only ones that wanted more from this movie. It does have some paranormal aspects in the movie. However, the film doesn't go into details on why it has this aspect. We don't know why the main kid, Finney, can talk to ghosts, or why his sister has visions in her dreams. The film doesn't even touch on the idea of why this happens, except that it needs to happen to move the film forward.
The acting skills of all the children actors are top notch. With this film, they all worked hard and made you believe the character they were all trying to portray.
If you are looking for a perfect creepy movie to get you ready for the Halloween spirit, this is that movie. There are some jump scenes but not enough to be over used. This film does make your skin crawl at times though. So it's more of a creep thriller than a paranormal horror you might expect going in.
Get that popcorn ready and get ready for your skin to crawl with this one!
'The Black Phone' is in Theaters June 24th, 2022.
