Downton Abbey: A New Era is the continuation film of the popular British series. The Crawley family aims to maintain their extravagant lives as the world around them is changing. When those changes start to appear in the manor, the family must choose whether they will reject or accept them.
If you have never watched the Downton Abbey series, you can still watch this movie with understanding. The introduction is filled with a background of all the characters’ stories. While it is long and almost comical, it is helpful to jump into the story without being completely lost.
This background is important because the characters truly make the movie what it is. They provide the audience with a balanced scope of comedy and drama. This in contrast with their life of bliss, including the servants loving their life at Downton Abbey is enough to be able to sit through the movie. The muddled multi-plots are heavy to follow as well. It feels like playing pinball with plots trying to find connections within all the storylines.
While it is fun to get fully immersed in the characters and their lavish life, the constantly blooming plot is very saturating. This does not take away from the picturesque film that Downton Abbey turns out to be, even if only for one watch.
