Our favorite super cute, super fast blue hedgehog is back, in this action packed sequel! Ben Schwartz returns in the titular role as Sonic, also returning are Sonics adoptive parents, James Marsden as his adoptive father, Tom, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie. The incomparable Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Robotnik, hilariously evil and back to his usual antics.
Sonic starts off pretty much where it left off. Sonic is adjusting to his new life (and getting into some mischief) while his parents head to Hawaii for Rachel’s (Natasha Rothwell) wedding. Sonic makes a new friend, Tails, voiced by Colleen Ann O'Shaughnessey, who voices Tails in the Sonic Games! Sonic and Tails become best friends, on a quest to find an emerald that contains unlimited power, they must reach it before Dr. Robotnik gets his evil hands on it! Sonic and Tails are met with some resistance from Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba and must work together as a team to defeat Dr. Robotnik.
I enjoyed the movie and thought it was entertaining, there is humor for adults and I was invested in the outcome. I will say, there was a clear lack of female presence. Maddie and Rachel are amazing and I enjoyed all of their scenes but they weren’t in it much until the end. In addition, Tails is a boy character and even though he’s voiced by a female, he’s still a boy. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are all males, where is the female representation? This is something important to me and it did effect my opinion overall.
Clocking in at 2 hours, I felt like it was a bit long and some parts here or there could’ve been trimmed off. My niece however, loved it, and was thoroughly entertained through the whole movie.
'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' is in theaters on April 8th, 2022.
