'Candyman' is in Theaters August 27th, 2021.
With the thought of a new 'Candyman' coming out you may get a little excited. Then you hear the name Jordan Peele and now you are all in no matter what. This is the thought I had, even though I get scared easily, and never watched the first one, yes I never saw the OG 'Candyman.' After watching this one, I really need to go and watch it now though since there are tie ins.
For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; HBO’s Watchmen, Us) and his partner, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris; If Beale Street Could Talk, The Photograph), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.
I will say this movie doesn't pack a lot of scares in it. I wasn't expecting jump scares, and there are only a few, I was expecting more fears that would go in my mind, but it just wasn't there. Peele does hit issues that will make you think, but they will not haunt you at night after you watch this movie.
Jordan Peele does bring in issues we are dealing with in todays society, like in his previous films. It just seems like ge picks an issue, runs with it, then stops for thirty minutes of the film, then picks it up again.
With this movie, make sure you pay attention to the clues and watch closely with what is going on. You don't want to miss anything because you won't get a second chance to go back and remember whag you missed. I would also suggest to watch the orginial version, so when the audience cheers, you will too!
Rating: 3 out of 5
