Headlined by Carey Mulligan as Cassie, whose calculated performances never disappoint, for feature debut writer-director Emerald Fennell (also find her in Season 3 and 4 of “The Crown” as Camilla), this film has the impact to be remembered as the quintessential film of the #MeToo movement. By focusing on the female perspective in a toxic male-dominated landscape, Emerald and her crew highlight the misogynistic patriarchal world we live in.
Cassie’s motivations and prior “unusual circumstances” are uncovered slowly throughout the film, but it is clear from the outset as she teaches men of the horrors of sexual assault, this is no ordinary movie. Many of its moments create powerful frames that echo the pointed dialogue and contrast ironically with the incredibly curated soundtrack. Remixes of “Boys,” “It’s Raining Men,” and “Toxic” provide for both instant gratification and analytical depth and will have you ordering the OST immediately after the film ends.
