'Promising Young Woman' is in theaters on December 25th, 2020.

From ground-breaking director Emerald Fennell comes a delicious new take on revenge. Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman … until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

From the first beat to the final shot, “Promising Young Woman” is a non-stop thrill ride that impressively defies many cinematic expectations. Headlined by Carey Mulligan as Cassie, whose calculated performances never disappoint, for feature debut writer-director Emerald Fennell (also find her in Season 3 and 4 of “The Crown” as Camilla), this film has the impact to be remembered as the quintessential film of the #MeToo movement. By focusing on the female perspective in a toxic male-dominated landscape, Emerald and her crew highlight the misogynistic patriarchal world we live in.

Cassie’s motivations and prior “unusual circumstances” are uncovered slowly throughout the film, but it is clear from the outset as she teaches men of the horrors of sexual assault, this is no ordinary movie. Many of its moments create powerful frames that echo the pointed dialogue and contrast ironically with the incredibly curated soundtrack. Remixes of “Boys,” “It’s Raining Men,” and “Toxic” provide for both instant gratification and analytical depth and will have you ordering the OST immediately after the film ends.
