Yesterday is in theaters on June 28th, 2019.

HEY JUDE, or dude, or everyone! ‘Yesterday’ heads to theaters this weekend! I’m not going to lie, I’m not a hardcore Beatles fan, I do know all of the hits and that’s about it. Regardless, I did go into the theatre being excited for this movie. This movie is directed by Danny Bole, the same as ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’ I really liked that movie so I did have high hopes this one would be good too. After watching the movie, I can confirm that the hardcore Beatle fans out there will in fact enjoy the movie!

The movie is about a struggling musician Jack Malik (Himesh Patel). He gets into a bike crash while the electricity around the world mysteriously goes off. He wakes up in an alternate universe where some things don’t exist for example, cigarettes and the band, The Beatles. Jack is the only one who remembers the Beatles and their songs, therefore he uses their songs and presents them as his own.

This movie is not as great as Slumdog Millionaire, but it wasn’t bad either. I felt the first act is a little slow paced and I was sometimes bored. But as soon as the second act comes it becomes quite enjoyable. This movie isn’t just about The Beatles and their music, it’s also a beautiful love story. Ellie (Lily james), Jack’s first manager and his life long best friend, has had a crush on him and has hopes that one day he will love her back. I’m a huge fan of her, so I may be biased, but she was a very strong character. She was very supportive, kind and loyal to Jack. She even drove him to gigs because he couldn’t drive.

Ed Sheeran plays himself and was entertaining as an actor just as he is a singer. Kate McKinnon from SNL played Jack Malik’s manager Deborah, she was very funny. But I think the funniest was Joel Fry who plays Jack’s roadie. He steals the spotlight every time he’s on screen. Also, the Beatles songs they used in the movie were great, I found myself listening to them after leaving the theatre.

If you’re looking for a funny love story with some Beatles songs to jam to, then this is definitely the movie to watch this weekend!
