Tolkien is in theaters on May 10th, 2019.
‘Tolkien’ explores the formative years of the renowned author’s life as he finds friendship, courage and inspiration among a fellow group of writers and artists at school. Their brotherhood strengthens as they grow up and whether love and loss together, including Tolkien’s tumultuous courtship of his beloved Edith Bratt, until the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear their fellowship apart. All of these experiences would later inspire Tolkien to write his Famous Middle-Earth novels.
So going into ‘Tolkien,’ I didn’t know too much. I knew that it was about the author of ‘The Hobbit’ and such, and I liked those movies, so I thought this would be on the same level. Well let me tell you that I was mistaken.
This movie is more for fans of the Books, not the movies. This movie has a slow pace, like reading a book, compared to those other movies. So I would say you need to be a fan of his writing to appreciate this movie.
For some reason, this movie likes to have constant flash backs, that are not really needed. They could have just made this movie on a linear line, and it would have gotten you through the Movies. Sometimes you needed to really pay attention to the movie to understand what year of Tolkien’s life you were watching.
So if you are a fan of the Tolkien books, or if you are a fan of history war pieces, you may want to check out this movie. You could just wait and see it when it’s on The History Channel and watch it then for free.
