The Grinch is in theaters on November 9th, 2018.
The Grinch is yet another adaptation of the classic story ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ by Dr. Seuss. I must admit I grew up on the Jim Carrey version that came out in 2000, therefore finding out they were making another movie, I was skeptical. Now, after watching the new film hitting theaters this weekend, I must say ‘The Grinch’ is an absolute joy. And I believe it to be the best movie Illuminations Entertainment has made so far.
The movie is about a grumpy green Grinch (Benedict Cumberbatch) who hates Christmas. He lives in a cave away from Whoville with his loyal dog Max. But of course, he then comes up with a plan to ‘steal’ Christmas. I don’t need to get into what the movie is about too much because it’s very similar to the other two adaptations. Although, the Grinch does have a slightly different backstory of why he doesn’t like Christmas. We also have Cindy Lou (Cameron Seely) who wants to capture Santa to ask him for a very special favor that I will not spoil for you.
Benedict Cumberbatch voiced the Grinch and did very well doing so. He respected the character and the long history behind it while adding a modern presence to appeal to today's audience. There are a few new characters such as a goat and a reindeer named Fred . There is a character named Bricklebaum (Kenan Thompson), the Grinch’s frenemy, that will make the audience laugh. We also have Pharrell Williams as the narrator who reads the poem with great rhythm. The movie has a gorgeous visual palette that soaks into christmas flavor and delivers a very heartwarming story.
Overall, The Grinch is enjoyable for the young and young at heart to celebrate “kindness and love, the two things we need the most.”
