Read Anthony's review of Life Itself.
Life Itself centers on a couple (Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde) which leads a multigenerational love story spanning both decades and continents, from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside, and are all connected by a single event.
Life Itself is in theaters on September 21st, 2018.
As a young New York couple goes from college romance to marriage and the birth of their first
child, the unexpected twists of their journey create reverberations
that echo over continents and through lifetimes.
To begin with I was surprised to see that Amazon were the ones
to create this project! And aside from one blatant “product
placement” in the script, I thought they did a stupendous job in
execution with this film.
On the technical aspect of things I want to start out by saying that
the editing was pretty fantastic. Whenever we needed to see
jumps in time within a set of characters we got a beautifully well
cut together montage of what was going on in everybody's lives
and it was seamless.
Now normally narration is a rather played out and frowned upon
technique; However, Amazon really did a good job on switching
things up with this older and less effective device. We see narration for what we assume to be
main characters end up being for others just to find out those others are just as important as the
initial protagonist. It sounds very convoluted but is much ease to follow than you’d think.
Probably my favorite part of the film was the script that was used. The dialogue was always
spot on. When it wanted to be funny it made everybody laugh for precisely as long as they
wanted the audience to laugh for. When it was dark, it was grimace enough for the level of
severity of these events to really sit in and impact the audience. And the most impressive part of
the script was its ability to portray how we feel with the words we want to say versus what we
are able to actually convey to others. And shows how perspective is everything when it comes
to what is trying to be conveyed.
Overall this movie was a bit of a roller coaster of emotion. Starting off very high and happy and
funny. Quickly diving deep and melancholy. Ultimately to arrive back at the start with a rather
happy and fulfilling ending. This seems like a great date night movie with that special someone.
Go check it out while you can!
