Sorry to Bother You is in select theaters on July 6th, 2018.

Sorry to Bother You tells the story of a young man named Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) who lives in Oakland, California and is trying to make it in life. He finds his place at a telemarketing job where the goal is to become a power caller and quickly rises up by using his inner “white voice”. Green learns the true price that comes with the high salary of being a power caller.

This movie starts off with a hit of the reality of how hard it can be to try to make it in the world when everything seems like it is against you. The character Cassius Green wants to impress his girlfriend and find his calling in life which makes him seem realistic. The characters quickly draw in the attention of the audience watching because they are so funny and their acting meshes together well.

Without giving too much away, Sorry to Bother You is definitely a satirical science fiction movie where it is unlike anything you have probably seen before. The plot flows together smoothly without any speed bumps until the last 20 minutes or so. Not that it stops flowing well but instead it goes in a direction that you probably have no idea of expecting.

While it might be hard to look past the surface level of flat of weirdness at first, once you do there is a bigger message that Sorry to Bother You is bringing to the table. The director chose such a unique and fresh path to get to it that once I sat back and digested what I just saw I was overall happy with the movie.

The movie made me laugh, feel uncomfortable and disturbed me in the course of the 1 hour and 45 minute runtime. It’s chaotic and organized all at once and hits viewers with a WTF moment with a practical message.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
