The Year of Spectacular Men is in select theaters on June 15th, 2018.

The Year of Spectacular Men was just plain funny. I laughed at about every other scene! It is comical in the way it brings about real life experiences within the lives of two sisters and creates a memory you can laugh about later. Nothing within this film seems predictable, unlike other girl meets boy cinemas. It is truly a “family movie” in the sense that director Lea Thompson (Switched at Birth) plays the mother of her own two daughters, in real life, in the movie too! Daughter Madelyn Deutch, playing Izzy Klein, and Zoey Deutch, playing as Sabrina Klein, come together in a time of need.

Izzy Klein, entering a “midlife crisis” in her 20s, is attending college and taking acting classes. Undecided with what she wants to do in life; she begins to question her relationship, lifestyle, and moving back home. After her boyfriend of 3 years kicks her out when she even mentions the mere thought of moving back home, she is forced to go stay with her younger sister. Sabrina Klein, the younger sister, is already a successful actress in a committed relationship with actor boyfriend Sabastian (Avan Jogia). Mother, Deb, and daughter Sabrina, living what seem to be perfect lives, are in for an unexpected turn of events. Izzy, miserable from her breakup and the confusion regarding her late father’s suicide, decides she is going to travel to California with her sister. During the 12 month span of living with her sister, we get to endure The Year of Spectacular Men. What it really comes down to in the end is, “bitches need bitches.” (You’ll understand after you watch this movie!)

I must say, one thing that really shocked me was how much promotion they gave to the alcoholic beverage known as “Four Loco’s.” With all the controversy and bad news surrounding the drink, I was surprised to see how many times it showed up within this film.

Zoey, although not the star of the show, played a significant role as the supportive sister. Her acting within this film was funny and she certainly played her role well. I look forward to seeing her star in movies to come. If you’re having a girls-night-in and need something new to watch, I recommend this movie. Two days later and I am still making jokes about it with my friends!
