Read Ashley's review of Uncle Drew.
An amateur basketball coach (Lil Rel Howery/GET OUT) stands to lose everything even his girlfriend (Tiffany Haddish/GIRLS TRIP) when his longtime rival (Nick Kroll/BIG MOUTH) steals his star player on the eve of the biggest streetball tournament in the world until he enlists the help of an unlikely basketball phenom, the 70-something-year-old Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving), in this spirited sports comedy featuring some of the biggest names in professional basketball (Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie).
Uncle Drew is in theaters on June 29th, 2018.
When Dax (Lil Rel Howery) spends his life savings to enter his basketball team in the Rucker Classic street ball tournament, he ends up losing them to his rivals. Faced with the need to find a new team he stumbles upon the basketball legend Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving). The two round up Drew’s old crew on a road trip and show that the love for the game can bring out their young spirit.
Based on the Pepsi commercial character where the 5 time NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving transforms into a basketball legend named Uncle Drew, this movie is the extended version brought to the big screen.
This movie is a good balance of when humor is done right from people you don’t expect to be funny. With big name former basketball players like Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie, it is easy to wonder if they can deliver the laughs and wow do they succeed. There were several scenes where I was constantly laughing because their comedic chemistry was so fine tuned and seemingly effortless.
The known comedians in the movie like Lil Rel Howery, Nick Kroll and Tiffany Haddish delivered the laughs as well doing what they do best. They seemed to be in their zone bouncing off of each other with their jokes and their characters were well developed which sometime is lacking in comedies.
There is a plot that is easy to follow and lots of laughs to be had along the way. In my opinion this goes down as one of the good comedy athlete movies that are good for watching again and again. I know I’ll be back in theaters to watch the team being put together. Also make sure to stick around after the movie is over for deleted scenes and how the makeup was done to transform the players into looking old.
