LaurenGallagher18 Reviews18 Ocean's 8 is an Awesome Spin-Off - Lauren's Review June 08, 2018 Read Ashley's review of Ocean's 8. Debbie Ocean gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's yearly Met Gala. Ocean's 8 is in theaters on June 8th, 2018. They say “every pro has its con” - but I can’t say I see any with Ocean’s Eight. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical when they announced this spin-off since I’m a huge fan of the Ocean’s trilogy, but this did not feel like a spin-off. I felt like I was watching Ocean’s 14! From the highly talented female cast, to the jazzy score, to the trademark transitions between cuts, this movie had all the right components to make a great film AND a great addition to the Ocean’s franchise. Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s sister, a recently released con who’s been spending her days planning to pull off the ultimate heist. With the help of Cate Blanchett’s character Lou, the equivalent to Brad Pitt’s Rusty Ryan, the two build the perfect crew. Their job is to steal a necklace from Anne Hathaway’s neck. Did I mention that the necklace is worth roughly $150 million dollars, or that the heist will take place during the star-studded annual Met Gala? If this doesn’t already sound like an awesome movie, then just look at the rest of the cast. Amazing performances all around from Helena Bonham Carter as the fashion designer, Rihanna, a genius hacker, Mindy Kaling, the jewelry maker, Sarah Paulson, an old partner of Debbie’s, and Awkwafina, the pickpocket. Keep an eye open during the film for surprise cameos from previous Ocean’s films and see if you can spot all the celebrities at the Met Gala. Overall, I am very happy to say this was an awesome spin-off. After the female Ghostbusters debacle, I was nervous that Ocean’s Eight would fall to that same fate. I found myself wondering if perhaps it would do better not being attached to the Ocean’s franchise and sold as just a female heist film, but after seeing it and knowing it had a strong crew backing the film, it was sure to be a hit. Director Gary Ross and his writing partner Olivia Milch delivered a great summer film that will entertain newcomers to the franchise, as well as satisfy us long-standing Ocean’s fans who have been waiting to be part of another job.
