In the hip Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook, single dad and record store owner Frank (Nick Offerman)
is preparing to send his hard-working daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to college, while being forced
to close his vintage shop. Hoping to stay connected through their shared musical passions, Frank urges
Sam to turn their weekly "jam-sesh" into a father-daughter live act. After their first song becomes an Internet breakout, the two embark on a journey of love, growing up and musical discovery.
Hearts Beat Loud is in select theaters on June 15th, 2018.
The perfect father daughter duo, this movie is sure to keep you tapping your toes long
after its ended. Nick Offerman, as Frank Fisher, plays the role of widow and loving father to his
only daughter Sam. Having started a band long ago, Frank just can’t get music and stardom out
of his mind. Quitting the only job he’s ever known, he starts up a band again with his daughter.
Sam Fisher, played by Kiersey Clemons, is a Brooklyn native and young teenaged girl ready to
head off to college at UCLA and wanting nothing more to do with her home town. However, in
the midst of it all, Sam finds herself quickly falling in love. Could this change her mind about
UCLA?
Sam and Frank’s first song goes viral on an Indi Pop Spotify station, sending Frank into
oblivion at the fact that his daughter will be leaving soon. But that doesn’t stop him from doing
whatever it takes to keep “We’re Not a Band” alive and jamming. Despite the original reluctance
from Sam, studying medicine in hopes of becoming a doctor, she gives in and continues
singing/song writing with her father for the time being. With a talent for music being passed
down from generation to generation, Frank has high hopes of his daughter Sam making it big in
the music industry. What Sam ends up doing next, is for you to find out! This movie was very
heartfelt and at some point, guaranteed to bring a smile upon your face.
Although there are a few missteps in this movie, you overlook them while focusing on
the passion and old school-hipster mix brought together to form the best Indi Pop songs you’ll
hear all summer. The sincerity in their lyrics tells a story all in itself; from the death of Sam’s
mother, to some of the bigger life choices they are both facing in the now. Offerman and
Clemons play their parts seemingly well, creating a progressive and well preformed film. I hope
you end up enjoying it as much as I did. I know I will definitely be telling my coworkers all
about this cute and fun new movie, by Brett Haley, Hearts Beat Loud.
